1000 Days at Sea...More like 307

On April 24, when Reid Stowe, 55, decided to sail for 1,000 consecutive days with his significantly younger girlfriend, Soanya Ahmad, 23, who, at the time said it was her first time sailing, except for a few trips up and down the Hudson River, we knew this was a bad idea. Just a few days into Reid and Soanya's love voyage, Ms. Ahmad had gotten seasick quite a few times. At that time, Sail Brooklyn wondered how Soanya would react to the Southern Ocean, which is arguably the world's most dangerous water.

While we're not claiming to be soothsayers, but the Southern Ocean did get the best of Soanya and at day 307, she climbed off the Schooner Anne and headed to terra ferma -- Perth, Australia, to be exact. According to the 1000 Days at Sea Website, Sonya decided to call it quits "due to Sonya's seasickness over the past few months, brought on by their entry into the Southern Ocean." Reid writes,"since entering the Roaring 40s in late November, Soanya has suffered from recurring and disabling seasickness, resulting in a loss of appetite, weight loss,
and apathy."

Sonya was picked up by the good folks at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. I'm sure a little R&R adn a good time with the Aussies will cure her apathy. Frankly, we didn't think she's make it this long. Particularly because just 15 days into the voyage, they collided with a freighter.

Reid Stowe is continuing his voyage and according to him, has or is planning to break the following records:

• Longest man and woman sea voyage
• Longest consecutive time at sea for a woman
• Longest time out of sight of land
• Longest non-stop American sea voyage.
• Longest space analogous experiment on the ocean

We're not sure which is more of an entertaining train wreck, 1000 Days at Sea or Britney Spears. Regardless, we'll continue to gawk.

Sailing In Floyd Bennett Field

In our efforts to show the diversity of sailors in the County of Kings, we move on shore, to Floyd Bennett Field where a group thrill seekers gathers for some land-based sailing. Blokart sailing (or cart sailing), uses a single sail to propel a compact, lightweight cart that propels along the ground. Blokarts have been recorded at speeds as high as 57 MPH and we're told they are fairly simple to sail -- even for novices.

At Floyd Bennet field, Blokarting is championed by the New York State Blokart Sailing Club. They are a friendly group -- we say that because a few summers back, we were asked a member about the Blokart and he offered to let us take her for a ride. Like morons, we declined.

This is a great alternative for those who have the sailing but, but perhaps can't swim or get seasick very easily.

Waterfront Living in Brooklyn

Like most Brooklynites we know, we are obsessed with real estate and frequently check out Brownstoner's real estate porn (aka its house, condo or co-op of the day). Unfortunately, the prices are out of reach for the average stiff.

However, there is a way to obtain the American dream, which is also a viable alternative to the overpriced condos in Williamsburg, South Brooklyn and Park Slope. And, it's waterfront property.

For a mere $139,000, you can be the proud owner of a 52-foot houseboat. This floating palace is approximately 1450 square feet, has three bedrooms, two bathrooms (or heads as we say), a woodburning fireplace, washer/dryer, lots of closet space and plenty of outdoor space. This property floats in Mill Basin, which is a bit of a hike from Manhattan, but where else are you going to get a waterfront palace for this price.

For those not willing to take the plunge, it is a fantastic alternative to a Hamptons share.
